This congregation was established in 1846 by Rev. Andrew Ferrier, newly arrived from Scotland with his wife and six daughters. He settled in Caledonia two years after his arrival and built the “Salem Cottage” which was located near the corner of Haddington and Argyle Streets and now demolished. Bricks from this cottage were used to create a memorial wall in McMillan Hall (the downstairs). Rev. Norman McMillan, served the congregation from December of 1938 to 1977. The first church, of framed construction was built on this site in 1849. After the congregation split along established (old) and new (Free) lines over the policy of appointing a minister vs. calling a minister, another frame church (now demolished) was built in Edinburgh Square (the town centre). Dr. Ferrier ministered to the Free church until his death in 1861. The Presbytery appointed Rev. Black in 1850 and he was transferred from charges in Simcoe, Port Dover and Jarvis. He served for 33 years. In 1887, the Presbytery amalgamated the two congregations with worship to be held at the Argyle St. site. The first church on the site, was demolished in March of 1898. The cornerstone of the present church building was laid on the 24th of June 1898 with the opening service held on the 15th of January 1899.
